Chronic Pain Management in Veterans with Co-occurring Substance Use Disorders

Funding Agency: VA Health Services Research and Development
Aware Type: Career Development Award
Funding Period: Nov 2014 - Oct 2019
Role: Principal Investigator

  • The project has three objectives:
  • Characterize pain treatment utilization following initiation of specialty substance use disorder treatment in the VA nationally
  • Identify patient and organizational preferences and characteristics that will inform tailoring of an evidence based primary care collaborative pain intervention for a specialty substance use disorder treatment setting
  • Pilot test the collaborative pain intervention in one VA Medical Center.

Impact:
Approximately 500,000 Veterans receiving care through VHA have a substance use disorder diagnosis, and a significant proportion of these Veterans experience chronic pain. Results from this study may inform future lines of research that can identify best practices for treatment of chronic non-cancer pain in Veterans with comorbid SUD.

Study phase:
This project is in its second phase
