- The project has three objectives:
- Characterize pain treatment utilization following initiation of specialty substance use disorder treatment in the VA nationally
- Identify patient and organizational preferences and characteristics that will inform tailoring of an evidence based primary care collaborative pain intervention for a specialty substance use disorder treatment setting
- Pilot test the collaborative pain intervention in one VA Medical Center.
Impact:
Approximately 500,000 Veterans receiving care through VHA have a substance use disorder diagnosis, and a significant proportion of these Veterans experience chronic pain. Results from this study may inform future lines of research that can identify best practices for treatment of chronic non-cancer pain in Veterans with comorbid SUD.
Study phase:
This project is in its second phase
